Why There Is Conflict over the DSM-5 Brenda Anwar Guilford Technical Community College While there has been conflict over the DSM, the DSM is considered to be the Bible of diagnostic in psychiatry. The American Psychiatric Association published the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and provides a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders. (DSM) The DSM has attracted controversy and criticism as well as praise since it has been used. It was first published in 1952 there have been five revisions, gradually including more mental health disorders some has been removed and are no longer considered to be mental health disorders, and the most notably being homosexuality. (DSM-11)†¦show more content†¦There have been a number of increases of diagnosable disorders. The DSM has made changes in how they are classified has mental disorders. The DSM -5 has changed the ways in which disorders are made this is another frequent criticism in the DSM-5. A number of diagnoses were put into other groups or reclassified a s disorders. (Nevid6) The diagnostic criteria have been changed in how criteria are made for particular disorders. Another criticism in the DSM-5 is in the change of diagnostic or clinical definitions for various disorders and how these diagnoses can change the numbers of cases in which these diagnoses applied. There is criticism of the DSM-5 putting new disorders into it and changes in existing disorders that can put a serious disorder into a category with a less disorder. (DSM-V, 2013) In the DSM diagnoses are based on signs and symptoms rather than the causes of mental health problems. The DSM is focus on the primarily concerned with signs and symptoms of mental disorders rather than the underlying causes of them. (Nevid101) The family in some ethnic minority or cultures, is expected to take care of family members who have psychological problems and they may resist use of outside assistance.
